20 postgraduate students were awarded a Hardship Grant from the College last academic year (2023-24).

56 individual students have been helped on one or more occasion by this fund since 2021.

Hardship Grants from the College are administered by the Financial Adversity Support Committee, comprised of the Senior Tutor, Senior Postgraduate Tutor, Finance Tutor plus two other Fellows. Any student facing financial difficulties that are not the fault of the student and were unforeseen and unforeseeable at the time of admission may apply for support from the College through this scheme.

The most frequent situation where a Hardship Grant is awarded to support a postgraduate student is where there is a pressing, unavoidable and unexpected situation that seriously disrupts study, especially where that might significantly disrupt a student nearing completion of a PhD. In these cases it is often situations like serious illness in the immediate family where a student needs to travel at short notice. This can include funding where these issues have caused the student to be unable to complete their PhD during the period for which funding was initially awarded.

Thank you for adding your support.

The current UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) stipend rate is £1,600 per month: helping one postgraduate student, even for a short space of time, is a significant cost to the College.

The College awarded £43,000 of Hardship Grants to postgraduate students last financial year (2023-24).

Over 87% of all financial support offered to students is funded by generous donations from alumni and friends. Your gift will help the College to continue to support its students so that they are able to achieve their full potential here.
